Center in Development

A group of leading community radiation oncologists, Boca Raton Proton Therapy, LLC (BRPT) and ProCure announced in 2008 that they will jointly develop a proton treatment center in South Florida. The center is likely to be built in Broward or Palm Beach County with site selection under way.

The need for a center in South Florida is great, as it is elsewhere in the country. The American Cancer Society estimates that there were more than 101,000 new cases of cancer in Florida in 2008. About 60% (61,000) of cancer patients will receive radiation therapy at some point in their treatment and, using conservative estimates, about 30% (18,000) of those patients could benefit from protons. Most centers are able to treat only about 1,500 patients a year, underscoring the need for more centers.
