The proton therapy center is well under way in Warrenville, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago. Construction began within weeks of the official groundbreaking, when patients, physicians, dignitaries and representatives of Radiation Oncology Consultants, Central DuPage Hospital and ProCure gathered to launch the center.
The center is expected to begin treating patients in early 2011.
The need for a proton center in Illinois is great, as it is elsewhere in the U.S. The American Cancer Society estimates that there were more than 60,000 new cases of cancer in Illinois alone in 2008. About 60% (36,000) of cancer patients will receive radiation therapy at some point in their treatment and, using conservative estimates, about 30% (12,600) of those patients could benefit from protons. Most centers are able to treat only about 1,500 patients a year, underscoring the need for more centers.
