Potential Demand for Proton Therapy

National Demand

  • According to the American Cancer Society there are nearly 1.5 million new cancer cases per year.
    • Of these, approximately 60 percent (900,000 per year) will seek radiation therapy at some point during care.
    • Using a conservative estimate that 30 percent1 of these 900,000 patients would benefit from proton therapy, approximately 270,000 patients could seek this technology.
  • Today’s operating centers can treat an estimated 6,000 patients.

Florida

  • According to the American Cancer Society there are approximately 102,000 new cancer cases in Florida each year
    • Of these, approximately 60 percent (61,200 per year) will seek radiation therapy at some point during care
    • Using a conservative estimate that 30 percent of these 61,200 patients would benefit from proton therapy, approximately 18,360 Florida patients could seek this technology
