Potential Demand for Proton Therapy

National Demand

  • According to the American Cancer Society there are nearly 1.5 million new cancer cases per year2
    • Of these approximately 60 percent1 (900,000 per year) will seek radiation therapy at some point during care
    • Using a conservative estimate that 30 percent of these 900,000 patients would benefit from proton therapy, approximately 270,000 patients could seek this technology
  • Today’s operating centers can treat an estimated 6,000 patients a year.

Illinois/CHICAGO

  • According to the American Cancer Society, there are more than 63,000 new patients with cancer in Illinois each year2
    • 60 percent of cancer cases in Illinois1 (nearly 38,000 per year) will get radiation at some point during treatment (21,000 in Chicago metropolitan area3)
    • Using conservative estimates, about 30 percent of these 38,000 cases could benefit from proton therapy: more than 11,000 per year in Illinois (more than 6,000 in the Chicago metropolitan area3)
