Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA), a leading adult and pediatric cancer center in the nation, will be joining ProCure Treatment Centers in developing a proton therapy center in Seattle, Washington. The proton therapy center will serve patients with cancer in the Pacific Northwest, including Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The proton center will be located on the campus of Northwest Hospital and Medical Center in north Seattle.
The need for a proton therapy center in the area is significant, as it is elsewhere in the country. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be approximately 66,140 new cases of cancer in the Pacific Northwest (Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Wyoming) in 2009. About 60 percent (39,600) of those cancer patients will receive radiation therapy at some point in their treatment and, using conservative estimates, about 30 percent (11,880) of those patients could benefit from protons. Most centers are able to treat only about 1,500 patients a year, underscoring the need for more centers.
